Celebrating International Astronomy Day –
23 September 2023
Happy International Astronomy Day for the second time in one year. We are lucky to celebrate this day, twice yearly, once in Autumn (between the middle of April and the middle of May) and again in Spring (between the middle of September and the middle of October). It’s ideally celebrated on a Saturday around the first quarter moon.
Its inception was created in California, USA, in 1973 by a man named Doug Berger, who was the president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California. He created this event as a way of bringing awareness to the public in an accessible and engaging way by installing telescopes in metro areas.
Since then, it’s continued to grow aiming to bring education and awareness about the importance of astronomy as a scientific discipline and its relevance to our daily lives. As well as simply appreciating and further exploring the wonders of our universe.
International Astronomy Day will next be celebrated on May 18th, 2024, how will you be celebrating?
Lets hope everyone gets involved on 18th May 24.
